PHM Scholarship Fund support continues for two promising bowlers! PDF Print E-mail

In 2015, support was made available for up to 12 prospective Commonwealth Games athletes under the age of 26, towards their preparation for events leading up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games and beyond. Athletes were initially selected based on their performances at the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa.

Whilst the award was made for an initial one year period, an in principle commitment was given for a further two years, subject to satisfactory progress being made against agreed goals set. This longer-term commitment gives athletes greater security and allows them to focus fully on their training and competition. Care has also been taken to ensure that this funding provides an enhanced level of support and does not duplicate funding awarded by other providers.

Following the Scottish Commonwealth Youth Games Trust meeting and the direct meeting with the benefactor for the PHM Scholarships, over the last few months, it has been agreed to support Bowls Scotland recommendations of:

-continuing to award £700 for the second year to Carla Banks

-continuing to award £700 for the second year to Darren Weir

The aim of this award is to contribute towards costs which will enhance the athlete’s progression within the sport that is not already supported by other grants/awards etc. This is now in its fifth year and aims to help young athletes prepare for events in the lead up to the Commonwealth Youth Games or Commonwealth Games.  The scholarship contributes towards costs which are not already supported but which will enhance the athlete’s progression within the sport.

The PHM Fund has been supported by a private individual who seeks to support young athletes aspiring to progress within their sport. To date since it was established in 2012, the Fund has supported 20 athletes from 10 sports.
